There is a problem with the way corporations manage risk. By making a potentially ineffective assessment of risk and uncertainty (and often ignoring uncertainty altogether), decision-makers are exposing their organisation to unknown threats and are unaware of potential opportunity. In strategy terms, they are planning in a vacuum and ‘steering their ships’, unencumbered by the truth – that the wind, currents and tide pushing them off course. Similarly, plans are made without due consideration of the risks inherent to the organisation – its people, their conduct, organisational structures, the extended enterprise and stakeholder perception (versus reality). In essence, the risks themselves have become the subject of management’s attention, as opposed to the outcomes to which they pertain.
